Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill to tackle systematic theft statewide during his visit to Long Beach on Wednesday, July 21, and met with local mayors and police chiefs. ..

Signature Act of Parliament 331Newsam said it was one of the recent efforts to tackle the increase in crime in California, expanding the California Highway Patrol’s Property Crimes Task Force, in Retrorow on Long Beach, a small business district on Force Street. Told at a press conference.

The bill, which passed 68-0 in the state legislature and 39-0 in the Senate, paves the way for government agencies to work together.

“There is an organized (criminal) effort (there) and we want to hunt those rings,” Newsom said of the retail theft. “We want to hunt a team of organized people who are connected not only within the community, but across the state.”

“Retail organized crime theft has grown into a $ 30 billion criminal industry, and the illegal proceeds from it are often used to fund other crimes,” said Amanda Ray, CHP Commissioner. “Some of the other crimes that this money is used in are auto theft, theft of personal information, and drug trafficking and smuggling.”

Since the task force launched in 2019, she said 668 investigations have been carried out, 252 people have been arrested and more than $ 16.3 million in stolen goods have been recovered.

In one example, a few months ago, the CHP task force destroyed a ring suspected of having been stolen from a grocery store. The stolen goods amounted to approximately $ 1 million. According to officials, he is hiding in the Garden Grove home.

Newsam said other investments have been made to prevent violent crime and address other issues. This includes $ 10.4 million for gun violence reduction programs, $ 12 billion for housing and homeless services, and $ 4 billion for youth behavioral health services.

Mayor Robert Garcia said he came to Long Beach to sign the bill because he is so supportive of the CHP task force efforts and other investments in public safety. The mayors of Los Angeles, Santa Ana and Riverside also attended the press conference, as did the city’s police chief.

Ahead of the press conference, Newsom hosted a roundtable with the police chief and several others to effectively discuss crime statistics and share best practices for dealing with spikes in crime.

Newsom also visited several businesses in Retro Row, Long Beach. Portfolio Coffee House owner Kirstin Kansteiner said the governor was honored to visit the city and his business.
